Union Island is a lovely place in the south of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG). Outside the hurrican season this place is a must for the visitor of the Caribbean Sea.
View from the street from Clifton to Ashton
This Island seems to be the loveliest place on earth with its white sand beaches, cocktail bars and restaurants. There are only a few ones and you don't feel like in an overcrowded tourists place.
I visited this island twice by sailing yacht in 2004 and 2006. Two of the 14 hurricanes of fall 2005 hit the island and it will need some time to restore its beauty. But nevertheless it is on the hot spots list for everyone coming to this part of the world.
Favourite spots:
"Beach of Eden"
The shallow shark aquarium in front of the Anchorage Club restaurant is worth a view. It has been damaged by a hurricane and is now hopefully repaired. The white sandy beaches of the northern side of the island and the beach of the Anchorage Club are like a place called Eden. Don't miss to visit the market where you can buy all exotic fruit but freshly harvested.
On the north side of the island I saw a stone pit where one man worked sitting in the shadow. The resulting stones looked beautiful but if you need to finish your house by the end of your life you should help him to advance.
What's really great:
Pupils with their Sponsor List on the beach of the Anchorage Yacht Club Hotel
Walk from Clifton to Ashton. The look from the street over the sea towards Grenada is great. Feel the relaxed atmosphere when you meet the people living here. On the north side there is a hotel embedded in a scene you normally find in dreams.
On the beach of the Anchorage Yacht Club I met children gathering donations for their school. They have a list of all who donated and needed their signature to proof the origin of what they collected.
Sights:
Beach scene of Anchorage Yacht Club
The beach scene is like on many beach places but less crowded than the tourist places you know from your travel agency. Some vendors sell hand made decoration stuff which serves well as a reminder of your journey.
Take a little care of the guys who try to sell things you shouldn't buy. These guys are not dangerous but the possesion of their stuff is. This is the only dark side of the Caribbean.
Also the views from the streets on higher regions over the islands close to Union Island are great. Sometimes you can see a big cruiser full of rich people passing by. (By night they look like a christmas tree....)
Accommodations:
Hotel on the north side of the island.
Clifton Beach Hotel
Anchorage Yacht Club Hotel
And there is this hotel like out of a dream on the north side of the island.
Restaurants:
choose your diner
Anchorage Yacht Club Restaurant is close to the harbour. It is a nice place to eat and has sometimes life music for dinner. The shark aquarium in front of the tables gives the scene a romantic touch.
At the entrance there is a fountain where you can choose your meal.
Nice report, but limited down to earth practical info. There was a public boat sailing to Grenada - great door to see another interesting place. Still useful to encourage people...
Not many people experience this side of paradise. Nice report.
I visited the island about 10 years ago and was supprised how friendly there locals were. Also I had never been to such as small island with only two town. A really cool place.
