Fernando de Noronha is a pleasant destination for the traveller seeking for exotic, beautiful and safe places in Brazil. Furthermore, it is such a remote island that you will be one of the very few tourists enjoying it.

You need to pay in advance an inland tax at the airport for every day that you plan to spend there, about 10 US dollars per day. And the cheapest hotel costs no less than 30 US dollars (I was so lucky to pay only 20 US dollars the first night, after bargaining, in Casa Dora, but the rest I slept on the beach because I was short of money). But it is worth going there. Internet is outrageous expensive, but not the food, and you can have a good dinner for about 6 euros. There are daily flights from Recife, in the State of Pernambuco. Fernando de Noronha is included in the Varig air pass. The island is located at 400 kilometres from the Continent. Only has 26 square kilometres and if you are brave you can walk everywhere. There are “golfinhos” (small dolphins) near the airport, in the Baia dos Golfinhos. You should wake up very early if you want to see them and swim among them. They are harmless. One option is to spend the night in the beach nearby, as I did. In Fernando de Noronha there are no thefts, no beggars, no malaria, and no young girls looking for customers. Bring enough cash in Brazilian currency with you; otherwise you will lose a lot of commission to change your dollars or euros into Brazilian reals. In the hotels and restaurants they accept the euro at the same rate than the US Dollar.

lonely beach near Vila dos Remedios

Swimming, diving and snorkelling are the main tourist’s attractions of the Island. Every beach is practically deserted. Nearby you will find a restaurant serving local and delicious food and caipirinhas and other cocktails with cachaça, the Brazilian liquor.

another beautiful beach in Fernando de Noronha

To watch the sunset you should go to the beach at a walking distance from Vila Dos Remedios. There is a bar serving caipirinhas.

Accommodations: |
Casa Dora is the cheapest in the island, in Vila Dos Remedios. Accommodation in Fernando de Noronha is overprized. A hostel like Casa Dora, in Recife or in Olinda, for instance, would not cost more than 5 euros a night.
If you can afford it, I suggest you POUSADA ALAMDA. It will cost you about 60 US Dollars a double but the conditions are infinitely better than in Casa Dora.
There are two beaches at a walking distance of Vila Dos Remedios.

Restaurants: |
My favourite restaurant was a Brazilian one in PORT, near Air France. Some days of the week, usually the weekends, they serve seafood (eat as much as you can) with living music, especially romantic bossa-nova, and at the same time you listen the murmur of the waves under the moonlight (please, do not go alone, bring your girlfriend/boyfriend or find one). In the central square of Vila Dos Remedios there is another nice restaurant where you pay the food according to its weight.
