After a strenous safari on the african mainland (Tanzania/Kenia) there is a good place to relax: The Island of Zanzibar, off the east-african coast. Lovely beaches, good hotels and restaurants and friendly people. As there is always an ocean breeze, the climate is pleasant.

Favourite spots: |
Stone Town, the old part of Zanzibar City. Mysterious lanes and courtyards, the smell of 1001 nights coming out of every building. Nungwi, the northern end of the island: lovely beaches, plain but good accomodation, good place for snorkeling. Jozani Forest Reserve, where you can see the red colobus monkeys, which are unique to Zanzibar and only found in and around this forest.

What's really great: |
The mixture of african and arabic culture. Sunset or sunrise at Nungwi Beach while dhows, the typical local sailing ships are passing by.
Accommodations: |
Mnarani Beach Cottages, Nungwi, just past the lighthouse. One of the few places on Zanzibar where you can see sunrise a n d sunset, with friendly staff, relaxed management and just six comfortable bungalows built in local style, costing $75 for doubles.
