I come at this from a different perspective. It is much easier to pop in a 2mg flash card that will take 1,000 pictures than pack 20 rolls of film for a trip. Also, I love being able to see the digital image while I am still standing in front of it so that I can make adjustments. It also allows me to download pics as I go so that my family back home (namely my husband who doesn't travel with me EVER)can have visual proof I haven't lost which ever child is my companion on that trip ;-).
I found that when I switched from film to digital I took a whole lot more photos. I chose which ones I wanted printed, whereas before I printed everything on the roll, saving money. But mostly, I simply felt freer to take more and to experiment. I travel with two 2mg cards. I will typically shot 100 to 150 pictures a day on a vacation trip. Of those, I may print 10 but I may use 20 in a on-line album or in a photobook.
I'm take photos for fun - I am not a photographer but that is my two cents.

That's absolutely valid. Digital serves your purposes.
Pictures are important to everybody. They are important for different reasons though. Family pictures are important memories to a family. News pictures are important to many of us. In my case as a professional, pictures are the 'footprints' I hope to leave on this planet after I am gone. They are the reason I exist. Digital doesn't serve that for me. Or at least, not the way I feel film photography does.
P.S. You really should try and drag hubby out on a holiday sometime... lol --- Best Regards, Mike Bruin

Thanks all for helping me solve this.
I have purchased a second hand Nikon D1. I will use it for shots that are not intended for print, where film is not available and for 'dailies' when traveling.
It will save me about 10% in costs. --- Best Regards, Mike Bruin

And I would LOVE to get hubby out to travel but I've been married 30 years - its just not going to happen - beyond an all-inclusive beach resort anyway.... --- Life is not measured by the breaths you take but by the moments that take your breath away. Profile Pic: Tikal, Guatemala
