The history of Cusco started about 3,000 years ago when a few inhabitants of the Tiahuanaco Culture decided to settle next to the River Huatanay. During the 1000s the Incas settled in Cusco, but it was Inca Pachacutec the Emperor who converted Cusco in the Empire of the Incas.
Nowadays, Cusco is a cosmopolitan city where it is possible to find the best of the Southern Peruvian culture. LOCATION
Cusco is located on the eastern end of the Knot of Cusco, its altitude is aroun 3,300 m (10,800 ft.) Cusco is the historic capital of the Inca Empire and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1983 by UNESCO. It is a major tourist destination and receives almost a million visitors a year. It is designed as the Historical Capital of Peru by the Constitution of Peru.
