Dec 02, 2008 07:00 PM Reports on 80 countries... and more to come

Reports on 80 countries... and more to come I have just published a report on Odense, in Denmark. Denmark is the 80th country I have published a report on GLOBOsapiens, so far. It is a good milestone.

I have 14 reports in progress. They will cover France (3 reports), The Netherlands Antilles (1 report), Australia (1 report), Latvia (1 report), Lithuania (1 report), Estonia (1 report), Belgium (3 reports), Nevada (1 report), Illinois (1 report), Colorado (1 report). But I have ideas for more. Perhaps Hungary, The Czech Republic, The Netherlands, Trinidad, Ireland, Turkey, Iceland, Monaco, maybe a little more about Poland, Spain, Portugal, Greece, Ghana, Mozambique, Namibia, Libya, Chile, Cuba, and the UK...

I need to get those 14 done first, though. Later, I might take requests... :)

Nov 24, 2008 07:00 PM Before I was a GLOBO Premium Member...

Before I was a GLOBO Premium Member... I started to build up my travel page with GLOBOsapiens, but I did not have enough allowance for picture upload and I feel that some of my albums and galleries are somewhat incomplete. So, I decided to upload some more photographs to do them justice. It is an interesting exercise and I need to be careful not to post [too many] any duplicates.

You may have already noticed that I started to fill in some missing information on some of my reports, too.

I hope you bear with me as I complete the task.

Nov 16, 2008 07:00 PM Ustka - and the visit is over

Ustka - and the visit is over Yes, it was painfully a very short visit indeed. I should try to come back in January for a few more days. Hopefully weather was going to be better, too - giving me more opportunity to re-discover my former home town. I had notices a few changes. The local authorities revitalised a few old crumbling fishermen houses and improved the pavements and roads. Now, there are many more benches in the town, and even the port is taking shape. Fish processing factories had been moved outside the town, and as the building have been being demolished and replaced by harbour tavernas, cafes, pensions, and apartments. There is still plenty to be done, but I could see that things are taking different shape already.

Nov 15, 2008 07:00 PM Ustka - raining badly

Ustka - raining badly What can one do when it rains cats and dogs? The wind makes it impossible to hold on to an umbrella. It is really hard to enjoy such day. I had not been to Ustka for almost a year - the longest break I had ever made! Anyway, there were quite a few people brave enough to face the storm and take a walk on the beach or in the woods. The streets were rather empty, and although the wind was significantly stronger at the beach, that was where the main action took place. It was dark, but the sun came out occasionally creating a few periodic rainbows.

Nov 14, 2008 07:00 PM Ustka - the Baltic during the storm

Ustka - the Baltic during the storm Weather was really stormy. The gale winds were very strong. But I had to go and see the beach and the waves. It was not raining that much, but the wind kept picking up the grains of sand placing them in the hair, nose, mouth and eyes. Not a very pleasant experience. The waves smashing in to the wooden wave-breakers were a somewhat relaxing sight. The seagulls walked along the shore completely resigned. There was no way for them to catch any fish in that weather.

Nov 13, 2008 07:00 PM One day to go - Ustka, I'm coming

One day to go - Ustka, I'm coming OK, I m nearly there. Now, I am counting the hours; 24h, 23h30',... It will be one of the longest journeys to Ustka, since I will need to leave in the middle of the night, and I will unlikely arrive before 11 o'clock in the morning.

It will be my first time I do that. I will have to use a night bus N550, leaving from the front of my block and then change to another night bus at Canning Town, which is always tricky, to reach Stratford Bus Station. I have not been to Stratford for ages, and I understand the stations have been refurbished nicely in the run up to the Olympics 2012. Then, I will hop on a National Express Coach running to the London Stansted Airport. Of course, it would be much easier if I could take a train, but in the UK trains do not run all night. This is bizarre and messes up with connection to early morning flights.

In the past, I would just have taken a taxi, but I am done with this extravaganza. If I just had a car, like my friends. They just jump in their Subaru, wizz along the motorway, leave the car at the airport, and off they go. But for a single traveller like me, this would be extravagant, too. Wouldn't it?

Nov 12, 2008 07:00 PM Two days and counting - Ustka, I'm coming

Two days and counting - Ustka, I'm coming I read in the local newspaper that in the harbour in Ustka lost its railings separating the pedestrians from the edge of the main pier. They had been in place since 1978 but no-one really remembers why they had been raised. An alarm was cried by some that pedestrians risk falling into the river. There are no regulations that would require such structure to be put in place in ports. In fact, farther down the sea, the pier has no railings at all. So, why the worries? Call them paranoid?

And then, last night it was reported that a 62 year old woman almost drowned in the port. She clung on to tire-bumpers and was exhausted. She was saved by immigration officers and claimed that she had slipped and fell into the water. What a coincidence.

Anyway, it will be weird to see no railings. I do not remember the port without them.

Nov 11, 2008 07:00 PM Three days and counting - Ustka, I'm coming

Three days and counting - Ustka, I'm coming I am hearing that there have been a number of changes in Ustka. The old part of the town had received a grant from the European Union to 'revitilise' some of the old fishermen buildings. The town received new pavements, lanterns, benches. I am hearing that there will be further changes to the seafront promenade and the harbour, which has been ceded by the Sea Authorities to the local municipal authorities.

Two new hotels have been built, both claiming 4 stars, and there are new places to chill over drink. I am very curious, so the minute I arrive, I will grab my camera and embark on a big rediscovery of the town. Weather forecast for the weekend is lousy, according to which there will be rain. This will not contribute to a very nice walkabout or photos, but I will do my best.

Nov 10, 2008 07:00 PM Four days and counting - Ustka, Slupsk & Gdansk, I'm coming

Four days and counting - Ustka, Slupsk & Gdansk, I'm coming It has been so long since I went to Poland that I cannot help counting down the days. I have been snoozing with the decision to go, as the country has become very expensive. It is due to the rapid appreciation of the currency. Anyway, now that I am coming, I would like to pack so many activities into my short visit that the planning is getting ruthless.

I will be landing from London in Gdansk (medieval crane in the old harbour pictured here), and then of course taking off from Gdansk, too. I am not sure if I have time to drop by for a cup of coffee to the old part of Gdansk, but if I do then that will be a miracle. I am not counting on it, but perhaps the Christmas lighting will be set up on the Dluga Street and the Dlugi Targ, illuminating it nicely and putting it in a festive mood. I cannot even remember when it was last time that I visited Gdansk for the sake of visiting it and spending some time there. It must be at least four years. I cannot imagine the thousand year old Old Town has changed much since then.

Nov 09, 2008 07:00 PM Five days and counting - Ustka & Slupsk, I'm coming

Five days and counting - Ustka & Slupsk, I'm coming On this trip to the Baltic coast, I will be visiting Slupsk. The city used to be the capital of voivodship, which triggered its rapid development. Before WWII, the city was a lovely place, full of picturesque Pomeranian architecture with Germanic influences. Sadly, the advancing Soviet Army blew up the majority of little houses and medieval defenses. Little remains to this day, as the socialist governments of the People's Republic of Poland did not care about rebuilding the historical centre. And yet, there is enough to see - like the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes (pictured here with the water mill amongst the beeches). If I have time, I will post a few pictures and write a report for everyone.
