You can lose everything, but nobody will take away what you saw and what you experienced...

Nov 19, 2009 07:00 PM Via Frankfurt to Texas
If you use cheap air connections you usually pay the other price - night waiting in the airports, delays etc... I was forced to spend the night in Frankfurt ' Germany. Not in the airport - it is easy to book the hostel bed via hostelworld.com
From the main airport there is convenient S-train going to the main train station Hbf - it takes 15 minutes and costs 3.70 euro /2,50 two years ago/.
Frankfurt hostel is just 100 m in front of the main station entrance. If you are lucky you will sleep well in the 6'bed dorm /I did not - other people came in the middle of the night and made a noise/
But in the morning they serve good full buffet breakfast - included in the rate.
Then the train again and the flight to Dallas - long day! In the evening at sunset I was in El Paso.

Nov 18, 2009 07:00 PM New voyage: escaping to the sun...
In Poland now we have short, dark days. Wind and rain almost daily... It is good time to escape to the warmer region to enjoy blue sky, sun, local people and new places. Yes, I still have many places to see around the world. Where to go? As a budget traveler I had a lond sitting at the computer to find an interesting offer from the airlines. In the autumn many of them have special offers. Then you make a choice, click, click - and the air ticket is appearing in you printer. 40 years ago, when I started my traveling I did not expect that such opportunities will come in the future.
So - I now need few hours to pack my backpack and I will fly on the discounted ticket to the USA. Then I will cross the border to Mexico... Keep your fingers crossed please!

Nov 14, 2009 07:00 PM With Globetrotters, Climbers, Sailors...
Till 2 or 3 a.m. we attended the slide shows from all corners of the world. I saw already most of presented sights but it is still a pleasure to see again the places I visited years ago. My impression is that the quality of pictures projected there is improving year by year. One of the most interesting presentations was given by Piotr Strzezysz, who recently was climbing on a bike mountain roads of Kyrgyzstan. It was not his first hardcore expedition and I highly appreciate his achievements. The audience enjoyed my slideshow (the longest one during our meeting, it think) showing the remotest parts of my 8th round-the-world voyage. I was also honored by special diploma... Many of us attended the Jubilee Dinner in the national costumes brought from the far-away countries... We had a lot of fun...
Brave and very charming Polish yacht lady-captain Marta Szillajtis Obieglo just did solo round-the-world voyage on the small boat. It was a pleasure for me to see during her presentation many little islands I also visited on my trails - like Vava'u, Cocos or the Marquesas.

Nov 13, 2009 07:00 PM Meeting of Polish Globies
The 25-th Jubilee of our Meetings was also a chance to invite the special guests to join us. One of them was Leszek Cichy - he is best known for making the first winter ascent of Mount Everest together with Krzysztof Wielicki in 1980 which established the winter ascent record of 8.848 meters.
He was also the first Polish climber to complete the Seven Summits and a number of other prestigious climbs. Leszek is almost my age and quite well known person in my country. I followed him on the Everest Trek in 1987 - alone, to see the summit from Kala Pattar - staying some 6 kms above sea level. See our picture...

Nov 12, 2009 07:00 PM Exchanging travel ideas...
Does any other nation has a meeting like this? Let me know!
In the lovely mountainous scenery of the mid-November (with some snow in the background) I attended 25th Annual Meeting of Polish Globetrotters in Szczyrk - in the mountains, at the southern border of Poland. About 300 "real travelers" - peolpe who travel on their own - from all over Poland came to share their travel knowledge and their last achievements. For me it was a nice occasion to meet many old friends who also love to travel.

Sep 12, 2009 02:00 PM G-5 on Lena River - memories...
It is worth to write that the most important segment on my 9th Round the World voyage (from Siberian Yakutsk to Tiksi and via Road of Bones to Magadan on the Pacific coast) I travelled with four outstanding globetrotters. Here they are - the toptrotters, as I call them - on the picture taken on the riverboat cruising Lena. From left to right: Kevin Hughes (USA), Jeff Shea (USA), Andre Brugiroux (France), Jorge Sanchez (Spain) and the only representative of the Eastern Europe in the party...
All of them visited already all states of the world - and much more!. Don't ask me who is the best - I do not travel for the score and I do not feel to be authoritative judge... But it is worth to mention that Jeff climbed also all Seven Summits.
Thank you dear friends for your company on this hardcore trail!

Sep 10, 2009 02:00 PM It is good to be home...
It is good to have a peaceful nest to return... It is warm summer in Poland. Flowers are still in blossom in my "Wojtkówka", a pile of letters is waiting on my desk. I was so nice to hear again the voices of my best friends on the phone. First slideshows and presentations are already confirmed for the end of September... So much pictures to develop, so many articles to write...
But... What the traveler is doing after returning from the long journey? Can you imagine? He thinks already about the next expedition! :))

Sep 09, 2009 02:00 PM Time to say goodbye to Canada...
End of the voyage... I am flying back to Europe.
When I started from Poland at the end of July I did not expect that my Siberian Voyage will convert to the 9th Round the World Journey... Siberia - Russian Far East - Manchuria/China - Canada. See the new route map - it wad completed after return...
Due to the lack of time and money for the first time on my round-the-world route I did not stop on the Pacific Islands. Pity... But I believe that someday I will come back to the Pacific - my favourite region.
This was one more wonderful journey. New people, new landscapes, new adventures... Thank you, my friends for keeping your fingers crossed - except the bad weather on Kamchatka everything was OK!

Sep 08, 2009 02:00 PM By car to Lunenburg...
Lunenburg is an old town on the South Coast - some 100 kms from Halifax. Due to its rich history and old architecture Lunenburg is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
I wanted to see it. But I recognized that there is only one bus per day - at 5.30 pm (40 CAD round trip) so if you go by bus you have to spend there a night and to return at 11 am. Not very convenient...
I decided to rent a small car for one day. You know that I am the backpacker but sometimes even for the backpacker it is the best solution, especially if you can share the cost of rental: 45 CAD per day plus tax plus fuel. Petrol cost here 1.10 CAD per litre...
Lunennburg is very picturesque - full of old buildings, with very interesting Fisheries Museum, academy anch couple of churches. Definitely worth to see. On my way back I saw also nice lighthouse built on the bare rocks in Peggy's Cove... Lovely Day!

Sep 07, 2009 02:00 PM East Canada - one train per day...
Old, good railway days are almost over. At least in East Canada... There is only one train per day running from Montreal to Halifax. They call it "l'Ocean" (do not forget that I am already in the French part of Canada). "Ocean" needs 22 long hours to ride 1346 kms distance. I bought my ticket again on the Via Rail last minute deals page:
http://www2.viarail.ca/expressdeals
It was lovely sunset time when we were leaving Montreal Gare Centrale. In the morning I changed time again - Atlantic provinces are one hour ahead... Then there was a chance to enjoy panoramic views of blue bays and lakes, forests and pastures...
When we reached little Halifax station I noticed that "Ocean" is one hour delayed. One train per day and still not on time!
This was the end of my epic railway trip "Canada coast to coast". It is worth to count the lenght of my rail route: 4466+539+1346 = 6351 kms of wonderful, panoramic views of Canadian countyside. You will not see such a views from the plane!
Fortunately it is only 200 m from the station to the youth hostel on Barrington street. No beds! But I booked via net in advance so they accepted me... A bed in 6-bed dormitory cost 26 CAD. Good night!
