The lion was carved into natural rock in 1821 as a remembranc-e of Swiss mercenarie-s who perished during the French Revolution in 1792.

I was told a funny story about this lion, if you stand back and look at the outer portion, it's in the shape of a pig. Apparently the sculptor upset with the town, over fees(?), pulled a fast one.
