No, this is not a chapel! I was surprised to learn that this lovely building, built in the 1800's in Gothic Revival, is on the National Register of Historic Places and served as Bleak Hall Plantation's ice house. The building is pegged together and the walls are filled with sawdust for insulation.

Good info Jill, in Victorian times in England ice was nearly always stored underground, you live and learn!.

Tony, what you don't see is that the floor of this is built up quite a bit because our water table is so high. The river inlet is right behind this. There was no way they could have dug into the ground like in most places.

There is still evidence in Devon of ice stores which were lined with straw and filled with ice during the cold weather, before the advent of fridges, fresh food was very seasonal and led to many health problems due to a restricted diet, in many ways these were not "the good old days". btw. I still love detail:-).
