Peru is a fantastic country, if not a little dauting at first. The airport scene in Lima is an eye opener; there are a lot of hotel both which say they offer FREE tourist information, but ususally this is a lie and they are on commission. Before you clear customs, the public advice is much better and more independent. This also happend in Cusco.

I travelled with traveller cheques because I felt it was safer, judging by some of the news stories I had read and had no trouble changing them in Cusco or Lima, not sure what the provencial towns are like.

Hi Claudia!

Firstly, I hiked the Inka Trail at the rip age of 44 - not easy, but well worth the effort and very doable. My travel partner celebrated her 49th birthday on the trail. Like Kerrie, we relied on ATMs to refresh cash. We are both blondes and did have some machismo issues but nothing we couldn't handle. My friend had Diamox with her, but my doctor refused to prescribe it, saying that it can cause other side effects. Either way, neither of us needed it, and I live at sea level! Even at 14,000 feet we were pretty okay. Coca tea helps alot and a number of people in our tour did buy coca leaves to chew and felt those helped.

We went on to a jungle lodge up river from Puerto Maldonado which was also fantastic. The variety of animals we saw in the rainforest were incredible! Everything from cabybara to a jugaurundi!

The best piece of advice I got was to hire a driver in Lima. Lima was dangerous, and after the relative safety we felt in both Cusco and Puerto Maldonado, we were a little unprepared for that. We did hire a driver and saw twice as much as we would have seen otherwise. As a bonus, he negotiated prices for us while we were shopping!

Have a wonderful time!

Eire
