I think overall packing is just easier for men, and I for one am jealous! Shoes, for instance. After much grief, I have been able to narrow myself down to two pair, a low-cut hiking shoe and a pair of amphibious teva sandals. But neither is especially "feminine" and I have to pretend no one is looking when I enter the opera house or a nice restaurant. ---

Ah, Laundry! Everyone's favorite thing to do when traveling! But necessary, if one wishes to get close enough to a local person to actually interact with them :-)
Lots of people have recommended to me something called Campsuds, which you can buy at outdoor activity-type stores like REI. Its virtues are it is concentrated, so a little goes a long way, it rinses out easily, its gentle enough to use as shampoo if you're in a pinch, and its environmentally friendly.
I started out with a bottle of it on my last trek, and it was fine for rinsing out socks and underwear, but for heavy-duty dirt and odor I found I had to resort to handwash detergent powder, which I just bought off the shelf at a little drugstore (you look for a box that says "a mano" or whatever the local lingo for handwash might be--sometimes illustrations on the back of the box are helpful in making sure you get the right thing if language barriers exist where you are).
I found this approach so superior, the powder being very much lighter than the liquid soap, and very strong and effective (although more trouble to rinse out, I gladly trade that for clothes that actually smell clean!) that next trip I will start out with handwash powder. If you put it in a big sturdy ziplock-type freezer bag, it will pack anywhere (might want to double bag, just to be safe, and be sure to squeeze all the air out before sealing).
Also, you can use this same powder when you do finally visit a laundromat and wash your whole backpack full of clothes at once in the machine (while wearing your swimsuit).

I used an all in one bottled soap for laundry, hair, hands, fruit etc... It's good as a back up til you can get to a supermarket for better soapy products. Whatever you do, try not to take white clothes... trying to handwash them is a nightmare, you can never get them clean and i ended up chucking a load of stuff out! ---
Would you risk it, for a biscuit?

I like to have a good reliable torch in my pack. Underestimating distances on walks and getting caught out at night, Power failures in third world countries e.t.c.
A good old fashioned Pocket knife is also indespensable. ---
