information about malaysia  MalaccaMalaysia, Melaka
On the way back from a morning drive outside of Malacca to check out a fishing village and rubber & oil palm plantations, my wife decided that she had a craving for fresh durian (our guide/driver said the local durian was particularly good.) Durian, which as I recall was referred to by Anthony Bourdain in his 'No Reservations' episode on Indonesia as the "Stegosaurus stink-fruit of Asia", is definitely an acquired taste. The sizeable spiky fruit does have some weight to it and, as it grows in trees and tends to fall from the tree only when ripe (though it always smells 'ripe'), is known to be a hazard to life and limb in Southeast Asia. It is often said that durian "Tastes like Heaven, but smells like Hell", and as such it is not permitted in hotels, taxis and airliners. The inner flesh has a sulfur-like smell, with a rich custard-like texture and a taste like strawberry with an exceedingly mild hint of onion. The Malaccan durian was quite good, so I guess I've acquired the taste.
