Kuching - Malaysia The Sarawak Cultural Village, outside of Kuching, is a good way to familiarize yourself with the cultures of the various ethic groups that inhabit Sarawak, Borneo (don't be put off by the somewhat 'amusement park' feel of the place). Positioned around the picturesque grounds and man-made lake of the park are examples of the traditional homes of the tribes, fabricated from region-specific materials using authentic tools and techniques, which feature both decorative and every day use artifacts appropriate to the tribes, with members of the tribes in ethnic attire demonstrating their traditions, daily rituals, skills (carving, blacksmithing, blow gunning) and in some cases perform their tribal music on tradition instrument (in one case, modernized with a pickup and Fender amp for the benefit of the visitors). Tribal food can be sampled at the cantina, and the cultural stage show highlighting the performing arts is well worth your time. Trips to the park are easily arranged in Kuching.
