Mandalay - Burma, Mandalay Another view sunset on the Irrawadi River north of Mandalay; it appears that the locals have not lost their appreciation for the magnificent sunsets that can be had in Burma. This was my second sunset viewed from the deck of an old river boat on the Irrawadi. As before, it was a most peaceful and memorable experience. A glance at the photo evokes the recall of the sensation of the cool wind-over-deck drifting across the skin, of the rythmic growl of the boat's engine coupled with the hiss of the water breaking across the bow, and of the periodic lurching felt as the wake of a passing boat slaps against the hull. As we returned to Mandalay in the dim afterglow, the now-familiar groan of the engine gave way with a fleeting series of coughs and sputters to the low murmur of numerous conversations in Burmese, and the sound of rippling water gently lapping the shore punctuated periodically by the low thud of wooden planks coming to rest on weathered decks and the patter of departing feet.
