Singapore City - Singapore Singapore's Joo Chiat district is the best place to see examples of Peranakan architectural styling, where Chinese, Indian, Malaysian and European influences intermingle to create a unique flavor (not unlike the authentic Peranakan cuisine that is readily available in the district), where bright colors and detailed ornamental carvings feature prominently. There are a number of books (and pamphlets on the wall en route to the baggage claim at Changi Int’l) available that provide options for walking tours of Joo Chiat that will take in the more historic buildings. The nearby Geyland Serai market was a worth while side trip, though I believe the old building is being torn down as the market relocates. Though once infamously-known for its prostitutes, massage parlors and karaoke bars, Joo Chiat has been cleaned up and revamped to rightly move its rich Peranakan history and distinctive cuisine once again to the forefront.
