Hi there

I need help with travel journals. I have travelled extensively through the following countries: Rep of Ireland, Northern Ireland, England, Scotland, Wales, Netherlands, Belgium, France, Germany, Austria, Spain, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Italy, Russia, Vietnam, Singapore, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. I will be going to Slovakia on 17/3/06. I have also travelled to the following places in Africa: Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Moçambique and I will be going to Tanzania and Zanzibar.

My travel journals are all about 15 - 20 pages on average and very personalised. How do I convert them for Globosapiens?

I also want to post a photo of myself onto Globosapiens, but everytime I try it, it is rejected for being to big - but it is a small photo. What do I do?

Thanks

Juli Robertson

Hi Juli

I haven't been to as wide a range of places as you but I've travelled a lot in Europe and I've had longer holidays in Peru and Zimbabwe. Personally I like the way that different travel sites push you into different areas and i didn't find it irksome to adapt a lot of my former stuff for Globo.

However the following ideas might help you:

1. Do templates for your report headings and then make word [or whatever] documents and copy and paste them into the Globo format. Early on I wasted masses of time on reports that vanished for one reason or another.

2. Don’t feel limited to one town/city per report. If you look at mine, you’ll see that even the titles are often geared to more than one place [i.e. 3 E’s of 2 A.s on Evora, Estremoz and Elvas.

3. Don’t feel constrained by the headings – except for length. For instance I am a bit [big bit] old for clubs and in many places I can’t distinguish between pubs and restaurants. That gives scope to continue about a place when it needs more words than allowed under favourites or the like. Alternatively, you could get in an extra place or two.

4. Don’t be afraid of putting up a temporary version. It will be invisible until you ask for it to be published and you can amend it or add sections. Don’t forget that even a very short entry under pubs or such gives you the chance of another photo.

5. Don’t publish it until you have uploaded all the photos you mean to use. As soon as you do, people will start grading it and we can’t re-grade if you add to or improve it.

If you would like to send me one of your multi-page reports to davidcross@frogsmore72.fsnet.co.uk I’ll suggest how you might turn it into Globo reports – as long as you give me a bit of time.

Cheers

David

Juli,

I work from my journals too. Don't feel intimidated by this being a public forum - this is not a competition, everyone comes from a different perspective and each has something wonderful to offer. The trick is to boil down the information to what you think might be a) helpful, b) give a sense or feel of a place and c) include detail that guide books might have missed. My reports probably error on the side of being too personal in places but I write them as much for me as for anyone else.

With your member photo, you might want to reduce the pixel count. A lot of times that does the trick in terms of making the file size smaller.

I look forward to seeing your reports - you have been some marvelous places!!!

Hi Juli!

You have been given very good advice by two of our top Globo members: davidx and eirekay.

I could suggest you, before writing your reports, to read the reports of some of our most valuable members in this respect, who, apart from davidx (he has written 96 very good reports so far!) and eyrekay are: gloriajames, downundergal, wojtekd and mistybleu, for instance.

I look forward to reading your reports.

Hi there

Thanks for your suggestions. Sometimes I can get carried away with my travel journals.... I will try to de-personalise them and to look at at from the points you suggested. It may take some time, but its worth a try.

Thanks for the suggestion about the pixels for the photo upload - I will have to get somebody else to help as I can bash out about 120 wpm on the keyboard, but don't know much else about computters!!!

Kind regards

Juli

Hi David

Thanks for your valuable input. I will definitely try it. I must say I am also not one for clubs, I think I am past that age. However I love pubs and restaurants. I also like to go to places where I am a bit out of my comfort zone (except for toilets!). I will look through my journals and see which is the least personalised and e-mail it to you.

Thanks again. Kind regards, Juli
