Hi there,

well what can I say this is a very strange behaviour. No usefull replies from the person, nor does she want to take part in this discussion. But, continues to post content of similar quality.

I have spent a long time thinking about what is best to solve that kind of problem. There are several downsides on each solution and it is not sure what impact this action I would take would have.

The problem I believe we are facing here is that it is not about copyright, it is about attention grabbing in general and point grabbing in particular. For GLOBOsapiens it is extremly time consumpting to find a real proov, we are not the police who is looking for evidence. Going over the logs of the last couple of weeks I found that for example 1500 guest book posting points have manly resulted from flooding other guest books with questions that do not belong there. It is also way more easy to gather points if you do just copy and paste, or steal other pictures. That is very unfair to the other members who did way more to earn their way up in the rankings by submitting exceptional content on their own. In my opinion the main reason for such a behaviour is point and attention grabbing.

So here is my solution:

Currently we do only have positive points that sum up into your total and rank members for contributing.

Now we are introducing "penalty points" that go the other way around. One penalty "earns" 500 negative points. That allows to eligalise the total points of dubious member behaviour.

Penalties will show up inside the activities folder. Further more if a member has once received a penalty he will never show up again inside the "top 3 members of the week" list.

Result is, that this member gets way less attention and we have a system that is more fair to the others than it was before.

I know there are downsides of such a system, but by looking at the alternatives it looks like the best solution to solve such kind of problem. I do hope that this discusssion will not have to be continued from next week on and this actions have helped to solve the situation.

Best regards,

Andy

Good lesson! I can only fully agree!

This is a very effective and fair method of response.

i have an interest and concern for all who act in ways that we cannot easily understand.

In any event i believe you have shown something of the wisdom of Solomon - great combintion wisdom and youth

I agree - this is a terrific solution. It applies a very fair penalty for poor behavior but still allows this person to participate. Andy, thanks for resolving this so smoothly!

A very good solution Andy, I think it will be very effective. That will force us (myself too)to be more patient, more diplomatic and less harsh when getting irritated by extremely low quality or idiosyncracies, thinking twice about HOW to comment :-)

I must add too, to the fact that the copyright thing is entirely the responsibility of each individual members material, that, another way to discourage copy and paste uploads is to rate the items lower. The breach in this case above was so obvious, why do top members then still rate these reports (or sometimes pictures in the gallery too) as excellent knowing well that the material is suspect?

I think the solution with the penalty points is a good idea.

Perhaps Andy could create a button with every published content on which any member could press and Andy would get notified. Like that the whole business of reporting would be pretty easy.

It could be a button saying: content reporting.

And perhaps a submenu with fradulent, offensive, copyright, ...

Perhaps content with clicks on the reporting button could be watermarked with the warning: dubious content

Like that the reporting would be easier. Sometimes I see dubious content and I ask myself: has anybody reported this item?

I know this site is not about squealing but if we want to keep it's high quality I think something like this would be necessary.

What do others think?

About Guestbook flooding:

If all of us would delete those guestbook entries the earned points would be deducted from the activities page for all these members.

Or to be more precise I make a example:

Rudi had at the time of writing this entry: 829 Guestbook entrys with 2487 Points

Now I delete one Message of him in my Guestbook

If I reload Rudi's activity page It says now:

828 Guestbook entrys with 2484 Points

Something all of us could do... clean up our Guestbooks

Argh That takes ages...! A function that would allow to delete all entries before a certain date would be helpful!

Martin, a good example :-)

No need to clean up like that, I cleaned up my friends list and now regret it! I do often deleted entries where either the entry is double or corrected or, as Andy has noted above, where "flooding" is obvious.

Back to subject of pictures in reports:

Everyone should best use their OWN pictures and accept responsibility for their own uploads. Obviously pictures taken by other family or close friends are OK. I think that if photos and graphics (maps, sketches) of a foreign source are properly credited and the sources reliable, permission sought, the risk of legal action is less [this is not permission to do it]. I have quite a few reports to write still about new countries on my GLOBOmap where I don't have any own pictures, therefore the delay. Either (best) i'll write a plain text report or possibly add a few images showing a composition of collected items like I done for www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Quito-1360.html using just a government promotional postcard, money and local postage stamps. I see no problem with scanning hotel or service receipts, beer/wine labels and other collectibles or souvenirs either. If must, there are SO MANY options to make a report colourful other than intentionally copying the pictures of other unknown private photographers!

There are some, even 5*, and other reports that don't have ANY pictures - they are so well written that they don't need colour!

www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Ottawa-21.html

www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Solva-1608.html

www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Manly-1911.html

..... and many many more .....

Hi everybody,

as the situation seems to be solved for everybody I would like to end the discussion here. It makes no sense to put its efforts mainly into things like that. I believe we should now all concentrate our discussions on travel. This is why we are all here fore, right? :-)

Best regards,

Andy
