information about armenia  ArtashatArmenia, Artashat
Situated opposite the Ararat near the turkish border the small monastery is well-fortified with strong walls and towers as if defending itself against a hostile world. Here -as legend tells us - Gregory the Enlightener was imprisonned by his king for 13 years, until he convinced him of his faith, healed him from his illness and the king finally decreed that Armenia as the first country in history adopted Christianity as state religion. Gregory became the first catholicos. For the Armenians it is a very important place.
