Kerala is known as 'God's Own Country'. Its 600-km long coastline is almost paradise. The hill stations in the Ghats mountains on the east border are a good way to escape heat and humidity of the lowlands. The roads zigzags through rubber, tea and coffee plantations.
Kerala is India's smallest state and sandwiched between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka. It is famous for its beaches, paddy fields, backwaters and an aquamarine Arabian sea. Kovalam and Varkala have developed into important tourists centres.
Kochi, or Cochin, is Kerala's number one tourist destination and renowned for its kathakali dance. It has also been the centre of the spice trade since the day that Vasco da Gama discovered this part of the world.
Best time to visit is from January to April or in August and September. From October to December skies are overcast when neighbouring Tamil Nadu is hit by the monsoon. High tides and crashing waves in June, July and August wipe out the beaches and a beach holiday is impossible. [edit text][editors]
