Opi is a small hilltop town in the national park of Abruzzo. A number of the buses from Castel di sangro to Avezzano [but not all!] pull up the hill to hte bottom of the village. Continuation up the hill leads to a bar and a sharp left turn there leads to a steep hill to the summit, where there are fine views up a roadless valley behind.

Taking the road towards Castel di Sangro for what is variously said to be one to three kilometres [it's certainly more than 1!] will take you, on the opposite side of the road to the Val Fondillo with a forestry centre near the road. The Rough Guide recommends going early in the day in the hope of seeing bears but the scenery is equally delightful after a longer sleep, even though you will have to make do with horses, cows, dogs and lizards.
The town itself has a public wash place just below the principal church and a ski museum but you need to be a walker if you want anything fresh after the first day. [edit text]  [editors]
