3 – Inside Suso Monastery's by jorgesanchez

San Millan de la Cogolla - Spain It was constructed during the VI century. When the Arabs invaded Spain, cruelly destroying all our Churches, Cathedrals and Monasteries, and killing the monks, the anchorites of Suso Monastery hid well inside the forests and saved their lives. But the interior of the Monastery was razed. Today only tombs remain. The monks of Suso then constructed another Monastery nearby, called Yuso. Today Yuso is inhabited, and Suso uninhabited. Suso derives from a name meaning “upstairs” and Yuso from another name meaning “downstairs”. Both Monasteries are UNESCO Patrimonies of the Humankind.
