The island of Sal in the republic of Cape Verde is rather boring for hard core travellers. Most of it is just a desert with nothing on it. Tourism is confined to the southern town of Santa Maria, which boats the best beaches, hotels and nightlife. The capital of the island, Espargos, has absolutely nothing to offer. It is located in the centre of the island and it is curious why the locals would choose to stay there rather than by the sea. The most interesting place to see on the island are the salt flats near the tiny village of Pedra de Lume. The mining of the salt has scaled down but the cable car, which was once used to transport the salt to the harbour remains, although in a very bad state of disrepair. The island is however a great place to wind down and relax.
