Travel guide to Windhoek

Namibia - the heir

Namibia was annexed to South Africa until the 1990s, now indpendent it's a wonderful desert country to explore. However, Windhoek (which means corner of wind) is a welcomed break from that desert.

Most of the desert is flat, but as you enter the city you notice the elevation at 1650m, it hasthe Eros Mountains to the north and the Auas Mountains to the south.

The main road ‘Independence Avenue’ is on a hill and leading off is Fidel Castro Street; at the top of the hill is the Christuskirche – a Lutheran church built in 1910. Back in the day you could imagine that it was the city's tallest building in a prominent place, but now it’s views are obscured by the highrise buildings.

In the same area is the Kaiserliche Realschule on Robert Mugabe Avenue as well as the oldest building in Windhoek the Alte Feste which served as a military headquarters before becoming a museum. [edit text] [editors]
