Hotel Magnificent View
For a budget hotel this was quite comfortable. I suppose most of their guest are trekkers so all they need is the basic. Cost was around $10 a night. But in the winter I wouldn't consider staying here, let's just say it's 'air conditioned'. more

Everest Steak House
Everest Steak House was established in 1988 poised in the heart of Kathmandu. It is the best restaurant for its steak cooking! I will stongly recommend their spinnach soup, and the Pepper Sauce Steak Steaks will come in all shape and sizes with differrent sauces. Count between 200NPR to 300NPR for a steak. A beer will cost you around 180NPR 1$ is about 72NPR Vegetarians will find very dishes, so if you are a veggie, it is not the best place for you. (vegetable lasagnes and burger, or veg springrolls are the only option!) If you love meat, it will be paradise, after spending weeks in the mountains! more

Hanuman Dhoka (Durbar Square)
The square is the complex of palaces, courtyards and temples that are built between the 12th and the 18th centuries by the ancient Malla Kings of Nepal. It is the social, religious and urban focal point of the city. Taleju Temple, Kal Bhairab (God of Destruction), Nautalle Durbar, Coronation Nasal Chowk, the Gaddi Baithak, the statue of King Pratap Malla, the Big Bell, Big Drum and the Jagnnath Temple are some of the interesting things to see in this Square. An intriguing piece here is the 17 th century stone inscription that is set into the wall of the palace with writings in 15 languages. It is believed that if anybody deciphers this entire inscription, the milk would flow from the spout, which lies just below the inscripted stone wall. There are several museums inside the palace building. There is an entrance feeof Rs. 250 for all the foreign visitors to visit all the museums of the palace building. more

MOUNTAIN FLIGHT (See the Himalaya)
For those who are restricted by time or other considerations from going trekking, there are mountain flights that offer a panoramic encounter with the highest peaks on earth. The plane departs from Kathmandu and flies alongside the Himalaya to give you eye-level view of the snow peaks and then bring you back in one hour. Cruising close to the awesome massifs of rock and ice, the flight presents a mind-boggling sight. As the aircraft takes off and heads towards the east, you don't have to wait too long to find out what's in store for you. First to your far left, you see Gosaithan, also called Shisha Pangma, standing at the majestic height of 8,013m. Immediately to the right of Gosaithan, three appears Dorje Lhakpa (6,966m), a mountain that looks lies the number 8 lying down and covered with snow. To the right of Dorje Lhakpa is Phurbi-Chyachu, which looms over the Kathmandu Valley. more

Room prices to fit all budgets - $2 - $60 a night. Central location. Restaurant is handy but there are other food places nearby too. A popular place due to its location in the middle of Thamel. Kathmandu Guest House
It is a real pleasure to recommend this very lovely guesthouse in the heart of Kathmandu, in the area where they sell tanka and all kind of handicrafts. You can get a spartan room in hostels around Thamel area for even 3 US Dollars, but nothing to compare with the magnificent Kathmandu Guest House. There are rooms much more expensive, but they always offer a few rooms at backpackers’ pocket (I paid 12 US Dollars in the year 2005 for a superb single room on the first floor, with old style bath, wooden parquet, and XIX century furniture). Inside you will feel the atmosphere of mythical alpinists who before climbing the Everest spent the night in that guest house. The cafeteria is in the patio, in front of the reception. more
