I have a Canon Powershot SD630 which I adore, a replacement for an older Canon Powershot S410. I do have two batteries so that I can switch out if one goes dead. Martin has two good points though:

1) I have stayed in a number of places while traveling that have power available only during certain hours or none at all. I also wilderness backpack. In those circumstances, AA batteries would be the better solution.

2) I do have to flip through the menu to get to the settings, which requires that I pop on reading glasses.

All that aside, I swear by the Canon Powershot series of cameras (I also have a Canon EOS on the larger side). 3 of my kids have Olympus Stylus which work well. There are very small clip-on telephoto and wideangle adapters available for Powershots from 3rd parties.

My two cents.

I am loving my Canon 350D, which has consistently done well in reviews. I had a compact Olympus but it was a nightmare with regard to eating the battery power.

For a compact second camera I am considering the Canon Ixus 850.

Enjoy it while you can!
