Huaraz is the Peruvian center of alpinism and the capital of the province Ancash. It is the starting point for trekking tours to Huascaran (6768m) and several hikes to the Huascaran National Park. A hike to Vilcawain is remarkable, only 7km away. It leads to villages and beautiful nature and to a ruin of a temple more than 1000 years old. On the way back a stop at the hot springs is very relaxing.
In 1970 an earthquake destroyed nearly the entire city of Huaraz. It has been rebuilt, but is no longer attractive. A very picturesque spot is the Lagunas Llanganuco leading to the peaks of Chacraraju (6,108), world's second most difficult to climb, Pisco (5,850) and Yanapaqcha (5,593) or Pastoruri at about 5100 m, and walk inside a glacier...
In town, there are many travel, hiking, trekking and climbing agencies that help with organising virtually everything, from climbing gear to maps, skis, etc. Huaraz is well connected with the coast and the capital Lima. [edit text][editors]
