Hieronyma: She is a bookworm, who is not able to let books alone, she is a traveller who travels not to arrive, she is a knitter, who knits to think things over, she is a hiker who hikes to have nature as a counterpart. Who talks to her?

Orkney Islands

Posted: 2009-01-10 08:59 AM
Yes Christl, you managed to visit all those wonders. You are a very methodical traveller.
Except the Italian chapel, little I could visit in that island because of the rain, when hitch-hiking was almost impossible. Drivers do not stop the car because they are afraid to get it dirty with mud from the hitch hiker boots. So, instead, I went back to my hostel and drank some beers and playing chess with my English friends waiting for the rain to stop.
After Orkney Islands I took a ferry to Shetland Islands, further north, closer to Norway than to Scotland “mainland”.

In Stonehenge I slept by the side of the stones when the guardian of the site did not see me!

Your comment on my Kirkwall report

Posted: 2009-01-09 06:37 PM
Thanks for reading and rating my above mentioned report.

Christl, you always surprise me.
You have been in amazing places, even in the Orkneys, including remote Fair Isle! So you got to know that archipelago better than me.
Yes, I missed Skara Brae, you are right. But in compensation I visited Stonehenge, which is much more interesting.
I was hitchhiking and it was raining. Nobody gave me a ride there. Instead, the next day I made friendship with an English traveller who was heading to the Italian Chapel, and we were lucky. So I visited that chapel instead, erected by Italian prisoners of war.

Ciao
Jorge

Scilly Islands

Posted: 2009-01-09 01:28 PM
Hola Christl:
I have been in Scilly Islands!
I visited two of them.
I transcript you what I wrote in my Kirkwall report here in GLOBOsapiens:

Only five islands in this archipelago are inhabited. I visited two of them: Saint Mary’s, the main one, and Tresco, with its lovely garden.
Believe it or not, the fastest, more exotic, scenic and cheapest way to get there is by helicopter from Penzance, in Cornwall. I paid just 61 pounds for a round trip ticket to Hugh Town, Saint Mary’s capital, and returned from the neighbour island of Tresco. During the flights, which last about twenty five minutes each, you can admire the fantastic Saint Michael Mount and its castle.
The boat service was irregular and more expensive.
------
Now, only St Kilda Island, in Scotland, is missing. I will try to visit it soon, perhaps during this year 2009.
Auf Wieder Sehen !

My comment on your answer on my remark on your mention on my Yellowknife report

Posted: 2009-01-09 06:35 AM
Your two reports about Pakistan, the two about Bhutan, the lovely one about Kyrgyzstan with the pictures of the local people… and Palmyra, and Erfoud… all are jewels among the best Globo reports.
You always choose exotic and remote places and mix with the local people, like the good travelers, just like Alexandra David-Neel.
Hasta la vista

Thanks for your kind comments on my Yellowknife report.
You have an adventurous soul. You have been in remote places, such as Bhutan and Pakistani Kashmir where very few people travel, only brave ones (like you).
