Much as I loved the far north, for a first visit I suggest you don't go farther than the Lofoten Islands. If you like a mixture of mountain and coastal scenery, they are pretty Paradisic [?] There is a car ferry from somewhere north of Bodø [I think it's called Skutvik] to Svolvaer, the island capital and you can travel right down to Å, then getting a ferry back to Bodø.
You may find some of my reports on Norway helpful.

Hi Patrick
I have never been south of a line from Oslo to Bergen and I think the best person to help you would be Gard, who you will find if you click on 'people' in the yellow band and go to the third page [no 49 at the moment.]
I'm sure he won't mind you asking him [but by all means blame me if you want!]
As for farther north, I have a bit more to say. The scenery of the so-called 'Norway in a Nutshell' tour is terrific but so are the crowds, many of them in parties and, alarmingly, without a clue where they are or where they are going.
I certainly advise you to go as far north as Ålesund and see the area round there. Even though you will have your motorhome, I think you would find it worth while to go on the Hurtigrute boat to Geiranger and back as well as visiting it and staying in the vicinity by road. The same aplies to the train between Åndalsnes and the first station up [whose name I've forgotten.] I rate that as equal to the Flåm line on the Nutshell trip.
