Goreme - St Barbara's Church's by siffer

Goreme - Turkey, Nev¶ehir Perhaps the most interesting of the Goreme Open Air Museum churches, this mid 11thC church is named for St. Barbara, a young Egyptian woman imprisoned, tortured, and then martyred by her father for her faith. A simple cross with dome and several apses features traditional sacred art and also art in the iconoclastic vein. In the late 7thC, a backlash against ornate sacred art led to the iconoclastic period which lasted about 100 years during which human figures could not be used for religious imagery. Much of St. Barbara's is devoted to this art. Here, the Trinity depicted as three pine trees ( or three lances ) devoid of decoration. Note above the image the red lines drawn to simulate building blocks.
