Istanbul - Turkey, Istanbul The only modern structure on the Hippodrome was a gift from Kaiser Wilhelm to Sultan Abdulhamid in 1898 with eight marble columns supporting an octagonal dome. It was sited at the seats of the Byzantine Emperor where he enjoyed horse races, gladiator contests, and other events from an elevated position of honor.
Kaiser Wilhelm used gifts to forge an alliance with the tottering Ottoman Empire, gaining the right to construct railroads and drill for oil. Their alliance lasted through WWI.
