Istanbul - Turkey, Istanbul The Hippodrome was huge - only a small segment comprises the modern touristic area of Sultan Ahmet Square. Just the southwestern wall has been excavated, topped by modern day Istanbul. The capacity is estimated at up to 100000.
After the sack of 1204 and the Ottoman conquest several centuries later, the Hippodrome deteriorated Except for celebrations like weddings, it remained unused until reexcavated over the last 200 years. Most of the artistic decor has been removed to museums.
