Under the rule of the tolerant emperor Josef I ( Edict of Toleration 1781 ) the Jewish population of Prague was the largest in the world and the community prospered socially as well as economically. The Maisel synagogue, named for a wealthy business man, was built around 1592. It is the first stop on the Jewish Museum visit in Prague. The Museum is comprised of five religious buildings and a cemetery all inactive and functioning only as museums.
