Hempstead House was built to replace Castle Gould, but soon Mrs. Gould did not like Howard either. With their separation and divorce, the residence was sold to Daniel Guggenheim, an industrialist and philanthropist whose name decorates many art museums throughout the world.

The residence is nominally open to the public but often rented out for weddings and conferences and usually unavailable particularly on weekends. The interior architecture is said to be lavish but there are no furnishings in the building.
