Dresden - Germany, Sachsen The Saxon State Opera Dresden is based at the Semper Opera House, the only European opera venue named after its architect. It was totally reconstructed after WWII to the plans of the renowned Gottfried Semper originally built in 1781-8. This boat shaped Renaissance building reflects his love of Italian architecture and the opera with superb acoustics and great beauty. The opera house dominated Theaterplatz. The statues flanking the main entrance are Schiller and Goethe and the roof and niches contain statues ranging from ancient Greek and Roman gods, Moliere, Shakespeare to Euripides ( but not Eumenides ). Some of these are survivors of WWII bombings.
