information about hungary  BudapestHungary, Budapest
Budapest's largest church holds 8000 congregants. In a display of secular - sacred equality, it is exactly the same height as the parliament building. St. Stephen is the early king who brought Christianity to what today is Hungary and his mummified right hand is the most valuable relic the church contains. Painted marble and sculptures dominate the interior. Rebuilt after a dome collapse in 1868, the building is considered so safe that art treasures were stored there during WWII bombings.

The large square fronting the church apparently at one time was an ugly mess of kiosks and freelance purveyors. After a 2003 reconstruction, the square is cleaned out and lined by upscale restaurants and bars.
