Amsterdam - Netherlands, Noord-Holland One of Vermeer's less well known paintings ( if that is possible ) is filled with the symbolism for which he is famed. As the "Master of Light", most of his portraits were set in the same room in his mother-in-law's house. Here the figure represents the Catholic Church and is likened to the figure of Mary Magdelene she obscures in the background painting of the crucifixion by Jordaans. Her foot rests on a globe, as faith conquers the world. And on the floor Satan depicted as a snake, crushed and bleeding by the stone from which Jesus ordered Peter to build his church.
