Arab Street & Baghdad Street
The streets take after the names of 'Arab' and 'Baghdad' but dont worry, this is a safe place to be in Singapore for one to experience the Arab Quarter. Affectionately known now as 'Arabseque' because of its numerous budget eateries and textile shops. more
Blue Oasis
The blue decor is enough to entice you into this oasis. Serving mainly sandwiches, samosas and spring rolls. This is also where you can serve the net and catch up with your emails. The bonus, here is where you can find the cheapest beer in town! This cafe is located at Arab Quarter of Singapore. more
Babuyo Furnishings and Decoration
A facinating shop in Chinatown with three floors of showrooms that has an impressive selection of Buddhist/Hindu/Southeast Asian animistic-themed antiques from Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia and Burma, with much of it coming from Chiang Mai via Burmese immigrants and traders. The shop is practically a museum. more
Wah Lok Cantonese Restaurant
Located in the Carlton Hotel at Victoria Street (second floor), Wak Lok offers very good Hong Kong style dim sum in a rather classy setting; the crab fried rice is excellent! more
Charlie's Peranakan Food
A great way to sample the traditional Malay/Chinese hybrid cuisine of Singapore in the historic/notorious Joo Chiat neighborhood (don't be surprised to see Chinese and Vietnamese hookers plying their trade if you have to search for parking along Joo Chiat Rd. - in fact, a taxi would be a better way to go given the limited parking). Try the Rendang beef curry and the pork with mushrooms and bamboo shoots. more
The Banana Leaf Apolo
Located in Little India, the restaurant serves the food on large banana leaves; most people ate their meals the traditional way with their hands, though utensiles are provided for the uninitiated. The chicken tikka curry and biriani rice with a bit of raita (spiced yogurt w/ cucumbers) to moderate the chili/masala kick is definitely a winner! more
Inle Myanmar Restaurant
Located in the Peninsula Plaza shopping center (which features mainly Burmese shops and vendors on the upper floors), Inle (A-rated) offers good Burmese cuisine but no beef dishes, and only offers the pork and chicken curries with coconut rice on certain days (call to verify the availability of these dishes). more
Bei Fang Feng Wei
Located in Chinatown. I was a bit surprised to learn that the place is managed by a doctor, and was pleasantly surprised at how good the yang chow fried rice and pork dumplings with ginger soy dip sauce were. more
Tabuah Mas Indonesian
The restaurant is tucked away on the fourth floor of the shopping center (located at the end of Tanglin Rd. near Orchard Rd.), but is worth seeking out for its great rendang beef. more
Pulau Sibu, Johor
I got a bit tired of singapore and was disappointed at its lack of beaches. I found this resort in Malaysia (only 3 hrs away & THEY RUN A BUS SERVICE!) with the best beaches ever. I called the resort and they arranged everything for me. It was nice not to drive, see some on Malaysia, and visit a beautiful island. I would definitely recommend it. The name of the resort was
Sea Gypsy Village. They have backpacker A frames as well as a bit more upscale chalets. I stayed in the A frames and they were great.
If you have a few extra days, go! more
