Travel guide to Toledo

Toledo was capital of Spain until the 16th century. Of Europe's great historic cities it must be one of the most unchanged, situated as it is on a rocky hill.
The city's Moorish pattern makes it simple to get lost and this is part of the charm as you can almost guarantee finding something of interest, be it Moorish, Jewish or Gothic.
The cathedral of what is still regarded as the religious capital of Spain is a most grandiose building where the parts that require payment are well worth the money. You won't want to leave the choir with its magnificent carving and sculpture. There are two former synagogues pretty close together and the church of Christo de la Luz retains the architecture of the mosque it once was. El Greco is the painter whose works stand out here and the 'Burial of the Count Ortaz is to be found in the church of Santo Tome. The El Greco house is also worth a visit. The word allowance here is insufficient for Toledo. See
