I open this forum as a result of some recent comments in the pictures of a new Globo member, marcosfonseca, Brazilian. He has less than 500 points and can’t read this, at least not today.

I have sometimes seen too rigid comments and ratings in pictures and reports from old Globo members. I think that we should be more generous, especially with the newcomers. People can be offended if we are too mean.

If marcosfonseca today showed proudly his daughter in a picture (very nice daughter and picture, by the way), well, if the picture is not hundred per cent travel related, is OK to rating it with 3 points, for instance, he is the father (by the way, today in Spain, 19 march, is the Father Day, Saint Joseph) and has much determination in joining our club actively. With the time those pictures will go to the bottom of the today’s 26000 Globo pictures collection. No problem. But to rate it with 1 point is a shame (at a personal and father level).

We are not teachers in a serious university and the newcomers are not little students. We do not have to be so misers in giving points away, we do not give our money away but granting 3 or 4 points (or even 5 points) to a medium report or picture is not bad for Globo. If we are more liberal in giving points our soul will breathe wider and the newcomers will be happier and will feel at home in Globo. Of course, I make a difference between marcosfonseca picture, which has good quality, and today’s nonsense picture from somebody from Thailand where a whole group were exhibiting themselves (I think the author was athematrixx).

This is just the opinion of a newcomer who likes Globo

Isaac,

I can go along with your plea, and generally speaking newcomers are treated fairly. What makes you so sure that it was rated with 1 point?

By the way Marcos can read this message. Only messages in GLOBOsapiens intern talk are for members with over 500 points.

I wanted to rate that marcosfonseca pic with 4 points, but realized that it already had 1 point. I do not know who rated it before. Then I could only give 3 points. As a result, the medium rating after two votes was 2 points.

I did not know about the internal talks. I thought that the forum was only for members with over 500 points and 1 month. Now I know for the future.

1* for this photo is very unfair. I rated it 3*. Maybe there should be a feature that when some one wants to rate 1* it can only be done together with a comment in which the rating can be explained. That way there is no anonymous downgrading.

Marianne, I will give you an example about being too rigorous with the new members. I have many more, but just show you today the first one because it concerns you:

There is this wonderful report:

Bir Moghrein - A travel report by João Leitão

http://www.globosapiens.net/travel-information/Bir+Moghrein-1952.html

It has 13 comments by rangutan, magsalex, eirekay, horourke, gloriajames, etc., etc., all gave it 5 points and celebrated praises for a superb report in a very dangerous country where I think that no other Globomember has been, with the exception of wojciech dabrowski.

That report got the Report of the Month in November 2005.

Furthermore, I had a look at Joao Leitao web page; he is famous in Portugal, a professional photographer and a travel writer, too. But then somebody gave 4 points to that report with a comment out of constext that in my opinion is improper (by the way, that was you, Marianne). I found that report very good and also gave it 5 points, and the Management granted it the PoM, and it would have been better not to make that observation in the report.

Result: Joao Leitao has stopped writing in Globo after that. I am not saying that is just because of your comment but it is a pity to have lost that promising member.

Marianne, I was not thinking on you when I started this forum. I have many more such examples regarding other old Globo members.

Marianne, you are wonderful in Globo, very valuable and I learnt from you a lot (check your today's forum Rating reports where I praise your work), so do not take it personally, ok? I kiss you.

Hi Isaac

Guiding new members to what is wished or liked here at GLOBOsapiens is someting very important.

There are quite a few oldies that greet new members and wish them well and offer their help, which is really great and nice of them. Everybody chooses on who to greet and offer the help. I for myself usually greet the fellow citizens, but thats different for everybody.

With comments on pictures it's a though decision to explain what you didn't like about some pics because you will stand in the line of fire and will be blamed by others. See the comment of madness and see your topic that you started... Therefore I usually refrain from commenting bad pictures and only rate accordingly.

So if you suggest to tolerate those images and be more liberal with personal pics, I guess that we will have in a short time hundreds of those family pics in our gallery. Because when you beginn tolerating those they will attract more of the same style.

In my personal opinion I think that people are put off with those family pics. If this would have been the case when I was starting to look at GLOBO I would never have joined in the first place. What I really don't like is to see pictrues with the title me in front of, my wife, my daughter, my aunt, my grandma, ... I would like to see the wonders and beauty of this world, would like to be inspired to visit those places that people are showing pics of.

It's one point to be generous and nice to newbies but don't forget about the olides and pioneers, there have been times that pictures were rejected because being to personal. They might be put of and neglect their accounts here on GLOBO when we start to accept or even promote those family pics with higher votes.

Look at those members that post family pics... they usually have more family than other pics and don't show a lot more than 10 pics. Marcos for example has 6 pictures of his ten with family members in it.

As said before these are some personal thoughts of mine and are not to be taken personally, as I would be interested in this discussion to continue.

Have a great day

Martin

About:

Bir Moghrein - A travel report by João Leitão

Mariannes coment was dated from 14.12.2005 and joao last logged in 2.12.2005 he might never have bothered to check on mariannes comment.

It might be possible that he only joined and wrote some reports in order to generate traffic on his own site ;-) who knows?

Just some observations I made

Have a great day

Isaac,

Of course I won't take it personallly what you say. I have a certain ethos when I rate reports and shall never rate 5* when I think they are not perfect.

I don't agree at all that reports about dangerous countries should be rated higher than reports about common countries or countries that are visited by many people. It is not the destination that makes a good report it is the writing.
Furthermore, I had a look at Joao Leitao web page; he is famous in Portugal, a professional photographer and a travel writer, too
This is no garantuee that his photos and reports are good. They are, in his case, but there are lots of professional travel writers who write badly. (example some of the writers of Lonely Planet, some of the guidebooks are full of clichés and inaccuracies)

If someone stops writing because of a comment it shows that this person cannot stand critique and this is a bad thing especially for a writer, because it means that he thinks he is perfect. And everyone knows that no one is perfect.

Would you think that a professional writer would write for a 5* rating? Writers write because they like writing and they can earn money with it. Here on GLOBO we earn no money for our writings and if this person can earn money elsewhere, he will go there. Maybe he was only here to get more exposure.

Thank you, Marianne and Martin, for your wise words.

Yes, probably you both are right. I just wanted to give my opinion because I liked the Brazilian picture (and the girl!) and got little angry to see only 1 point in the ratings. Everybody here likes Globo and have right to expose their doubts, that is why I started this forum.

Anyway, Joao could read Marianne comment without logging in Globo, you already know that this is possible. He also received messages in Portuguese from new members during 2006, as for instance in his Kazakhstan report.

In respect of me, this forum has already been explained thanks to your help and experience.

Gracias amigos

P.S. Globo is a wonderful site thanks to members like you!

Hi Isaac

Me to, i like to see the pciture of Marcos daughter, as for my eyes too, she is beautiful and the picture technically is well done, the exposition is good and everything well composed in a nice soft evening light well worth taking. But and that's where the basic idea of GLOBOsapiens comes into mind, this site is about travelling. If I want to look at pictures of beautiful young girls there are thousands around... but our site here is about travel.

Have a great day

Martin

p.s. sure it would have been possible for joao to read the comments offline but I doubt he did, he didn't ever thank for nice comments as it would be nice to do ;-) (1 guestbook entry in his activities folder (He might have written you a personal note in your mailbox but that you know ;-)))
