I've just thought of something I always wish we could have on Globo.

Can we send an invitation to friends through our album?

I mean, when we send an invitation with the default message, it's not going to be so effective to attract my friends to sign up. Plus, sometimes, my friends have difficulty signing up when they click on the invitation link.

If we can invite them to view our photo albums, and the requirement is to sign up as member, then that way, more people will sign up. What you think?

Thank you for all your ideas.

Inzaghi: Woww! You have really uploaded over 100 pictures in one run. That must have been loads of work. As you allready said this point is one which is discussed since globo is online. Since this point nothing could change my opinion on this topic. It would be technicaly possible - with lots of complex programming - to allow multiple uploads in one run. However this is something I do not want. Imaging if each day there would be 200 new pictures. It would create a huge problem since this requires first of all a person which has a look on the images and deletes unwanted like pornograghic or copyright protected pictures. Besides that it would be a huge technical task to have that data organised and secured with backups in case of hardware brakedowns.

Lets say this could all be handeled. The real reason why I personally think this is not useful is, because it would create quantity instead of quality. If you have 100 pictures on your hard drive and you can only upload 10. I am sure you will upload the 10 best images! Another thing is description of pictures. I saw for example that you did name those pictures like the city you took it. This will not help to find it later one if you search for lets say "Rhino". If you allow multiple uploads you can not describe each picture in detail.

I think its better to have few high quality pictures with decent descriptions online than 1.0000000. whatever pics. This would be a goal for communities like webshots.

Anyway.. I like your pictues. Looks like you had loads of fun in Europe :-)

Marianne, Janeyee: I like this idea and I will keep it in mind. Its not planed for the relaunch version, but I will keep it inside the "to do list".

What I am really interested in, is info on how to make it more easy and understandable for new globos to participate. There are about 25 people signing up each day, but verry litle of them become active. Most content comes from seniour members. I would like to get them more involved.

Comments on how to make it better what we already have is what I am looking for. I know that there is lots to improve, but I lost the eye on how new members see it which do not programm all that stuff. Its obvious for me how to add content, and most of you guys as well, but how about a person who comes from a serach engine and does not know what is possible on GLOBO.

Another thing is that most people are afreaid of signing up with their real email adress. Thats bad, bcause they loose touch with the community. They do not trust a new site. Passwords and email adresses are well protected on GLOBO, old members know that they do not recieve spam from us, but new ones do not. How to make this clear is one of the tasks.

I agree with Marianne and Janeyee ideas.

If one is interested, I can provide maps of most international airports.

What could be interesting is street maps of major city centers around the world. Also perhaps we could indicate, somehow where most embassies are found in each international city.

As per visas and passport information, it is often updated, therefore it would be difficult for the website to have the up to date information. I work for a major airline, and we sometimes have problems keeping up to date with that info.

Talk to you all soon. Keep smiling. ..

Andy,

When I first joined Globo, I found the member page layout (with all the links to each section) a bit confusing. It took quite a while to explore and understand how each works.

The same goes to my friends whom I have invited. Probably reworking on the interface would be a great help to keep new members, instead of them signing up and find this place not so user-friendly and go away...

Also, I am not sure but could it be one of the reason people are not participating because they don't feel "belonged" to this community? More activities to increase interactivity among members might catch more attention. My suggestions : to organise more activities (I don't know what yet.. but will suggest if I think of some) that brings members together, that require their participation and allow more people to get to know the new ones, then they will feel important and needed in this community.

In a local traveller group that I belong to, everybody knows everybody well. They've been to trips together, local or overseas. They try to help each other for many things, outside of travelling..

Not sure if this might help a little if not much.

Marianne's suggestion is #1 and frankly I would be excited to have her personally answer my questions on my beloved Amsterdam which I have visited so many times and lived in for several weeks at a time!

PS. foreigners who plan to go to Scheveningen should all first ask Marianne for the proper pronunciation of that seaside resort (or maybe even the spelling if I have made a mistake!) ... I learnt it in quite an embarassing way, but am proud to count myself within the ranks of those "who (now) know"! :)

Hi Inzaghi,

Correct spelling of Scheveningen. I admit it is a bit of a tongue twister, but in the end it is not so difficult to master. You just have to know how to scrape your throat. (No, it's not as bad as that)

Finally found time to transfer a lot of previously written travel guides from another travel site to Globo. Then, I found out a serious flaw here... the character limit on the journal entries. I have very long and well-detailed entries but they all had to be truncated - such a pity. For an example, check out my latest entry on PETRA, and you will see that my entry was stifled by the word limit. Compare it with my full length entries at www.igougo.com under my pen name "drmaximus" - you will see the huge effort I put in there, which I am unfortunately unable to bring over to Globo... (reason for the shift: igougo has become too commercial for my taste)... I have even earned a Palm pilot, shopping vouchers as well as 10,000 airline miles from them from my writing. I am not expecting the rewards here, but I am interested in bringing the wealth of information I have there over to Globo.

Also, it would help to extent the categories within each guide. For example, I might have several accommodation entries and no pub entries, or have 3 activity entries.

I think these issues need serious thought. My $0.02

I could not agree more inzaghi / drmaximus 'igougo has become too commercial for my taste' and I could add too big and has lost its community feeling.

The GLOBO character limit on the journal entries is a drawback and in my opinion a reason that many journals are very superficial.

If we are allowed more character space in the guide section it would be a big improvement. And many of us will be very happy if also more character space is allowed in the journals. I also think that qaulity will improve.

Hello Marianne,

I have increased the amount of characters inside the report section for the first paragraph to 2000 and the other ones to 1000 characters. The guide section now can hold up to 1000 characters (previous 100).

Hoever, I have seen some reports containing 2000 characters inside the first paragraphs and I must say I do not like it that much. There is to much text and makes stretches the report to much. Pictures from the second paragraph show up to low. My favourite article style is more straight to the point. People tend to have not that much time so most of the internet readers prefere to have loads of information inside short text. In Germany we would say: " In der Kürze liegt die Würze" :-)

regards,

Andy
