Uppsala is a lovely Swedish city, easily reached by a fast and almost silent train from Stockholm. It's an old University city and its best known historical figure was Linnaeus, the botanist who can be regarded as the founder of modern taxonomy. More recently a well known name from Uppsala is that of Hans Blix, once the UN weapons inspector in Iraq.
A short bus ride north from the centre is Gamle [Old] Uppsala, where there are three huge Bronze Age burial mounds.
From the station you can pass through the street, crossing a stream running right through the centre that gives the town a real distinction and then you can go up to the old castle, now in use as part of the University.
The Cathedral is a striking builbing, of Gothic design but constructed entirely from red brick.
The Botanical Gardens are superb, a fitting memorial to Linnaeus himself. [edit text][editors]
