Bern is the capital of Switzerland and is a UNESCO Kultural Heritage of the World. This beauty of a town was founded by Berchthold V of Zähringen in 1191. He chose the name Bern due to the fact that he killed a bear on this spot. That may also be the reason for the bear in the crest of the town and the canton.
Even to this date they keep bears as attraction in the Bärengraben next to Nydeggbrügge.
