Interlaken is situated between the Thunersee and Brienzersee and is one of the oldest resorts in Switzerland. It is more a summer than a winter destination, consequently some smaller hotels are closed in the winter. It sits amids forested hillsides dotted with villages. Snowy heights form the backdrop to the town. The Jungfrau massif lies perfectly framed between two hills and contributes to the resort's fame.
Interlaken is on the main Bern-Zürich train route and the gateway to the Bernese Oberland. Trains into the Alps depart from Interlaken Ost station. The town's centre and most hotels are near Interlaken West station. It is a bustling place packed with souvenir shops and tourists on their way to mountain resorts or on daytrips to Jungfaujoch.
Interlaken offers hiking and skiing possibilities all year round, add to this the excellent transport possibilities (trains, cablecars and funiculars) and it is clear why Interlaken is such a popular place. [edit text][editors]
