Have you ever thought about visiting Hungary? – if so, may I can give you some ideas to spend some really nice days in the capitol, which is one of my favourite across Europe!
view from Citatella
Budapest is really huge and the sights all over, so the best transportation is the metro – subway train! If you go there by car (as we did), you might get lost somewhere and may collect a lot of parking tickets if you run out of coins, so I strongly recommend to use the public transport, especially on your first visit!
Favourite spots:
One of the first places to visit is Citatella on Gellert Hill. Beside the breathtaking view is has a practical benefit as well: It overlooks the whole city and you can find the major sights from here to compare with your street map. Some useful words for orientation: utca is street, ter is square, hid is bridge Andrasy utca (street) with beautiful old houses ends up at the Hero square (Hösök Tere) – below runs one of the oldest metro trains of europe… mmm… or was it of the world??? – can not remember!
What's really great:
at Szechenyi Fürdö
Ference Liszt Ter, just after the opera house, is a good place to go for a drink, especially in the warmer month. Right now, there are some other roads which are quite fashion for going out: Kiraly utca (parallel of Andrasy) and Raday utca on Kalvin Ter along the inner road circle. Between Kalvin Ter and Szabadsag hid (the bridge) is a picturesque market inside a beautiful old building. A very special place to see I found a little out of town: Szobor parc is a new place where the communist statues and memorials ended. As I know, there is a bus going from somewhere in the city centre, you may ask in your hotel! Rainy days: if you visit Budapest in the winter month, may it is an good idea to spend some time in a thermal bath. Near Hero square is Szechenyi Fürdö (opposite the zoo) wich is quite popular on weekends. The indoor and outdoor pools are warm enough to spend easily a day - sauna and steam baths as well. Vaci utca is the main shopping street in town. One of the famous café house
Accommodations:
the parliament house from Hilton at Fishermens Bastion
Depends on your budget of course!
I was surprised, at the Interconti, near Vaci street they offered
(river view-) rooms from EUR 30,00 per night!
Restaurants:
Citatella statue
The castle: is one of the major sights in the city: the royal palace, Matthias church, the world famous Fishermens Bastion.
On weekend Hilton offers a delicious brunch for about EUR 20,00 per person. We been lucky to get a table right on the window, overlooking the river and the parliament house. The food selection was really worth to recommend, and … if you are by your own car: the castle is not open to the traffic and parking there is expensive, but as Hilton guest, they stamp the ticket which you got at the gate and you park for free there!
I enjoyed reading this report on a superb city that holds a very fond memory for me.
On the 1st September 2001 I was in Budapest and went to a British Pub to watch a wonderful football match..... The home team scored after 6 minutes - Jancker was the scorer.......Germany were the team. Then something remarkable happened, Owen scored in minutes 13, 48, 66 as did Gerrard in the 45th and Heskey in the 74th and England won 5 - 1. Ohhhh such fond memories.
However I had to read your report to see what sightseeing I missed ;-)
So good luck, keep up the writing and treating us all to more articles.
