Madeira summer 2004

  17 votes
Summer 2004 we were at Madeira, also known as the “flower island” and the most beautiful island of Europe! We’ve been here for 15 days and we stayed near Funchal.

Madeira is small island without sandy beaches, but with big rocks on the beaches, don’t go here if you prefer sandy beaches ;) The Island is an excellent place to walk, you really have not seen Madeira if you haven't experienced the wondrous and thrilling landscapes of the island!

Favourite spots:

Levada walking is one of the things you must have done! Even when you’re old and crappy (:P) you can do a few of the walks. You can use a local tour company and walk with at least 10 people and a guide along the levada's. However, we preferred walking alone with a little travel book as our guide. We rented a car and droved to the walks we liked. The market in Funchal is also a nice place to see and walk around, you can buy delicious fruit, fish and meat.

What's really great:
What I liked specials was the walking, the reason we had chosen to spent the holidays at madeira. We’ve rented a car for a view days. One day we drove over the west side of the Island and one day we drove over the east side of the island.

Sights:
Doca do cavacas, a beach and pool, when you walk a little further (through a cave) there is a little quit restaurant with a beach. We preferred this place.

Pico do arieiro, the highest mountain at Madeira.

Other recommendations:

A church named Igreja Paroquial de Machico The church of Monte is not very rich with regard to artistic works but it gathers some architectonic features, interior decorative elements and several paintings that make a visit worthwhile. Here you will also find the grave of the Austrian Emperor Karl I of Habsburg.

Interesting little island in the Atlantic - for its island-, sea-life and hiking, very attractive. A friend there, says landing at the airport is like landing on a giant aircraft carrier!

I think this report is underrated at 2* and is worth 3/4 - therefore I've ratd it four to try to push it up to 3 anyway.
I think I come into your old and crappy category and I should enjuy htis walking - but is it possible to reach the starts of the walks by public transport?
Cheers and let's have some more. David
