This is the question I asked when told this was the place I would be living and studying in for a year. Subsequently many people asked me the same question after I told them about the amazing year I had in Germany.
Wasserspiel and Herkules
So for those of you still wondering, Kassel is a town in North Hessen in Germany, with a population of about 260,000 people. It's most famous for the Documenta art exhibition which occurs every four years and also for the Grimm brothers - they lived there while attending secondary school. There are a lot of students around as the university is quite large. There are some truly beautiful sights, such as the Orangerie and Schloss Wilhemshoehe, although the town itself can be off putting as the buildings are not exactly easy on the eye. The social life is great though - plenty of pubs and clubs to suit everyone's taste. Definitely worth a visit to!
Favourite spots:
The Shamrock (formerly The Dubliner - the interior is exactly the same but it is now run by an Irish person. Karaoke on Wed nights is great fun!), Freudenhaus (they have beds as well as seats to relax on; the pizza is great and very cheap on 'pizza night' but i;m not sure which night this is now), Fez (opens almost all night), Cuba Club (absolutely tiny club but the music is great and they stay open as long as people are still dancing; I once left the club to find it was 7.30 am -oops), Musiktheater (different rooms offering different types of music to suit all tastes), Toni's (pizza and pasta - the best in Kassel), Kebabhaus am Stern ( for the best Kebabs in Kassel)
What's really great:
'Wasserspiel' in the summer - water runs down the mountain from the statue of Herkules, reaching almost all the way to Schloss Wilhelmshoehe - quite a sight! (see pic above)

This is one of the places we loved to go at weekends when I was stationed between Paderborn and Warburg in the ancient days of 1957/8! It brings back memories but I think it needs more ABOUT your favourite and special places.
