i have just got back from climbing kilimanjaro on the rongai route. i booked the trip through GUERBA who i had used before and as i paid over £1000 for the trek i expected an excellent service...

well, where do i begin with everything that went wrong! to cut a v long story short, basically our guides didnt speak a word of english and on day 2 when one of our group had breathing problems they didnt seem to care about her! any time we had any kind of problem because they didnt speak english they weren't able to do anything about it as they didnt understand what was wrong. you can imagine how worrying this is when youre trekking at altitudes up to 19000' and safety is a priority. also, i wanted to find out a bit about the mountain and tanzania etc while i trekked but of course my questions were met with silence. this is not what i expected!! then one morning we simply werent served breakfast and ran out of water. it was so annoying to pass all the other groups on the mountain joking and laughing and even sharing a drink with their guides. as we booked the tour through an english company and they guaranteed english speaking guides we couldnt believe what was happening. then when we got down off the mountain after 6 days without a shower, we were told there was no room for us at the hotel we had paid for and after a couple of hours we were moved to another one which the lonely planet says is $60 cheaper per night than the one we had paid guerba for. and guess what??? there was not one drop of hot water in the hotel!!!! after 6 days walking around in volcanic dust we couldnt even have a hot shower (there were no baths in sight). since ive got back to the uk all 5 members of my trek have complained to guerba. but all we have received is a token $250 refund and a generic letter. they have done nothing to answer all my concerns over the crappy experience i had with them and their letters have been really dismissive and condescending. PLEASE DONT BOOK A KILIMANJARO TREK WITH GUERBA IF YOU WANT TO HAVE A HAPPY SUCCESSFUL EXPERIENCE!

Favourite spots:
the landscape on rongai route is not as pictureswue as on teh marangu route

What's really great:
getting away from the area and the crappy experience we all had

How can i rate as this isn't really a travel report. However i do sympathise with your awful experience.

Jude, you said you've used this company before, so it must have had some good points. A little balance would be a little fairer, but I understand spending all that money for an experience that is marred isn't nice...

I agree with what andreas and frenchfrog said in their comments.

It would be nice to have seen some picutres.

your report is in fact a complain sheet about a company. That is always hard to judge if you are a person definatelly had that experience, or you are just an employee from a competitor and you are going around on travel sites like GLOBO telling people "Do not book at xyz". I advice to rephrase "My experience with company xyz" etc.

I understand your frustation, I would not have wanted to be in your shoes, but that subject should be posted in the forum (private), not really as travel report, but thanks for the tip, you are the third person I heard complaining about that company! Should include more photos and info to achieve higher rating. But thanks for sharing your experience
