Lush and Friendly St. Vincent And The Grenadines

We visited St. Vincent on the way to Bequia and the rest of the Grenadine Islands. The island has a small airport that does not accommodate jets so one needs to arrive on smaller fights connecting from Barbados, Trinidad, or Puerto Rico. It is lush.

Indian Bay Beach - How good is this place?
Indian Bay Beach - How good is this place?
The island is located just south of St. Lucia and north of Grenada about 100 miles west of Barbados. It is approximately 35 miles long and is comparable to St. Lucia in some respects but is much less developed. It has many black beaches but only a couple of typical powdery white sand Caribbean beaches and these are located at the southern tip of the island. (Indian Bay and Villa Beaches) Because of this it is a relatively undiscovered island. People that come here generally do so to commence on a sailing trip through the Grenadines. Some people also visit for it's renowned diving and ecotourism opportunities.

The island has approximately 100,000 inhabitants. The official language is English. St. Vincent and the Grenadines obtained independance from Britain in the 1970's. The major industry is agriculture, although tarrifs from the EC have curtailed the production of Bananas which was once the number one crop. Many farmers now find harvesting Ganja to be more lucrative. In fact, some of the waterfalls on the island are to be avoided because of landslides from erosion caused by the Marijuana farmers. It's use is obviously quite widespread and I was offered it multiple times per day. It was repeatedly referred to as the "healer of the nation, mon".

Favourite spots:
The quiet beach was busy on Sunday

We stayed at the Tranquillity Apartment Hotel at Indian Bay Beach, at the southern tip of the island. The owner of the apartments (Lucelle), went out of her way to make our stay here a pleasant one. Indian Bay Beach is usually completely quiet until Sunday when it appears that 10% of the island's population arrives to chill.

The Leeward Coast highway affords some stunning views through lush forests, cascading down to lovely fishing villages and beaches. Driving is on the Left

What's really great:
Lush Vegetation and rustic beaches!

Soufrierre is an active volcano that last erupted in 1979 and is still one of the most studied volcanos on the planet. One can hike up to the crater but start early because of the heat.

The ride up and down Leeward Coast tis beautiful as can be paired with a trip to see the set of the Pirates of the Caribbean in Wallilibou.
One should also visit the agricultural center of the Island - Mespotania Valley, referred to simply as Mespo by the locals. While here be sure to visit the Montreal Gardens which is much more spectacular than the more visited Botanical Gardens in Kingstown.

The local Harouin Beer coupled with a Roti is as Caribbean as it can get.

Sights:
The view to Bequia and the Grenadines

The lush mountains and the quaint fishing villages, as well as the view across to Bequia and on a clear day Mustique, Canuoan, and Union Island.

Accommodations:

Nightlife:
Sundown at Indian Bay - We Be Jammin!

Drinking a rum punch and waiting for the green flash every night was enough night life for us.

Hangouts:
Play time right below our apartment
Play time right below our apartment
Hanging out the beach chilling with locals was what we liked to do as we still had other islands to visit on this trip.

Restaurants:
Young Island
Young Island
Young Island Resort - I think I saw Amy Winehouse here.

Other recommendations:
The windswept Windward Coast

Fort Charlotte is interesting and affords great views of Kingstown and it's harbour. Fort Charlotte also serves as the current women's prison. Currently there are 14 women confined here, versus about 400 at anothe facility for men. Our tour guide reminded us that "we should not forget that the majority of these men were committing crimes for their woman"!

The Windward Coast i beautiful with waves crashing in. it is similar to all wind swept coastlines of other islands like Barbados and St. lucia.
