In August 2008 I stopped in Kompong Thom for 2 days to see Sambor Prei Kuk. I was surprised to find The American Restaurant on the side street next to the Arunras Hotel in Kompong Thom town center.
The American had homemade pizza and ice cream. Hardly what I would expect in the center of Cambodia. The quality was very good. They also have hamburgers and Khmer specialties. Its on the side street next to the Arunras Hotel displaying a big red sign.
I found Sambor Prei Kuk much more interesting than Angkor Wat. The place is a complex of 100 pre Angorian temples lost in a forest. It had one of those lost in time feelings. Its very easy to rent a motto with driver in KT for $4 round trip. I would definitely recommend a stop in KT for a day or two.
Favourite spots:
The American Restaurant and Sambor Prei Kok. My time in KT was very pleasant because of a good restaurant, a friendly staff and an exotic local such as Sambor.
What's really great:
Interesting atmosphere of Sambor Prei Kuk. Guides at Sambor were friendly. I tipped one a dollar to show me around. They spoke ok English.
Accommodations:
Mittheapheap Hotel acroos the bridge. Air con rooms with view of the river for $15 a night.
Restaurants:
The American Restaurant next to the Arunras Hotel in KT town center. Excellent homemade pizza! Look for a big red sign on the side street next to the Arunras.
