There is a lot to do in Kuranda

The village of Kuranda, is situated in North Queensland, 25 km from Cairns. It's located next to the Rainforest and the people made use of this to build a sky-rail and a scenic train to explore this region.

Favourite spots:

The skyrail is a nice way to explore the rainforest. How many times did we walk into a forest, probably countless times, but how often did we see these forests from above? Not so often I guess and there fore the Kuranda sky-rail is the perfect opportunity to do so. When you embark, you get a nice leaflet that tells you a lot of the things that you can see below you.

The sky-rail runs over the rainforest and it's a 7.5 km long gondola cableway and therefore also the longest in the world. The Sky-rail leaves in the Kuranda Station (366 m) towards the Barron Falls and from there it goes to Red Peak Station (545 meter) and goes onwards to the Caravonica Lakes Station (5 meters above Sea level).

1h 45min of relaxing and enjoying the sceneries around you, that is what you get if you board the Kuranda Scenic train. You see several waterfalls next to your way and you will have a nice view over the valley while you are riding this train against the valley walls.

What's really great:

Kuranda, was a blast for us, we came together with the rest of the Contiki group and we saw our first Aboriginal traditional dancing there. In Kuranda you can do many things, but riding that sky-rail above the trees of the tropical rainforest and that scenic train that brought us back to Cairns are worthwhile things to do.

But what I like most was my visit to the Tjapukai Aboriginal Culture park, were we saw that traditional dancing with lot's of explanation about those dances and we could throw also with a boomerang and a spear. Luckily the first one came back and the second didn't. Otherwise it would be too dangerous.

But be careful such a returning Boomerang can hit you also, so keep an eye open towards your own boomerang and one eye towards your friends one.

Sights:

The most beautiful and best sights you can find if you do the sky-rail above the rainforest, it's something different when you see the trees from the top. And the scenic train back towards Cairns beats the bus hands down. The sights are great.

Accommodations:

The rainforest resort is a Eco lodges in the rainforest.

This is a nice hotel with separate cabins for the guests. We stayed in a cabin with a bedroom on the first floor and two beds beneath the roof. It had a kitchen and dining area. So you find here all you need.

There is a bar in this resort where also locals hang out and there is a small animal park inside the resort. But it's also located inside nature and a nice place to put your feet up, have a few drinks and play some pool.

Hangouts:
Like stated in the accomadation, there is a bar in the hotel where the locals hang out. We played some games of pool with the Ozzies and later there was a life band.

Other recommendations:

In this Aboriginal culture park, you have a wide range of things to do and to explore. The most famous and visited is off course the traditional dance performance. You learn here more about the culture and their ways of life. Accompanied by a good explanation they show you several cultural dances.

Next to these dances, you can see some basket waving, and get some explanation about their way of life. Or do you want to feel like Crocodile Dundee and you want to throw a Boomerang and see if it comes back, or learn that they exist for lefties and righties. Or dream that you hit a kangaroo while you lance a spear towards a target.

Tjapukai is a place you can spend some time and you will not regret it.
